Pinguicula of the Temperate North is the first volume of a series of two books that document all carnivorous butterworts (Pinguicula) of the world, for the very first time and in unparalleled detail.

These spectacular carnivorous plants produce leaves lined with tiny tentacles tipped with droplets of glistening, sticky mucus. Small insects become affixed to the sticky, fly-paper leaves of Pinguicula, die and are digested offering the plant nutrients to grow.

In this volume, all Pinguicula taxa from the USA, Canada, Europe, Asia and northern Africa are documented individually in great detail. The morphology, diversity, taxonomy and botanical history of all recognised taxa is described in depth and in clear English prose. Descriptions are accompanied with numerous spectacular images covering many Pinguicula species that have never been photographed before.

Signed copies bear the signature of Stewart McPherson.

    :

Yesterday,I received this book (along with “Pinguicula of Latin America”) .

    In Pinguicula,
When compared like with other carnivorous plants of good books and materials,
    I think that is less.

This book’s content is latest and mention many species to detailed.
    It will be very helpful.

This book to made as one of publication of very good quality, with many photos and details text.

    Thank you.

I have long waited for these books to be published and distributed. I am happy to finally own them and I appreciate the author’s effort to compile this work as a first comprehensive follow-up to Casper’s monographie. It is especially delightful to watch the many impressive pictures of species in their natural habitats.

Though I could not give full rating since I have difficulties to use these books as preparation for field trips. Often it is hard to figure out the natural distribution of species since the nations in which they occur are not always clearly statet in the text. Sometimes one has to investigate to which country the given province names belong to. Here I wish it was more like in Taylor’s monographie on Utricularia with clearly statet country and province names.
Moreover, I am missing a key for species identification which I usually would expect in such an extensive work.
